A Look at Your Future: World Made By Hand
One of my favorite authors, James Howard Kunstler, has released his newest novel: World Made By Hand. He also wrote The Long Emergency, which I recommend highly.
I believe there are two types of people in this world - those who want to be amused and entertained and those who want actionable information to give them an edge in dealing with life as it is. I write for those grown-ups who want the whole truth so they can know what is likely coming. That way we can be prepared for the most likely scenarios. James Kunstler is someone worth listening to.
Kunstler's latest novel is no "light reading." It is heavy stuff, but believable - and even darkly humorous - if you are at all tuned in to the myriad catastrophes that are occuring everyday. If you can read between the lines of your daily news, you might have imagined a similar future. World Made By Hand only makes it more graphic and real.
When you put together the imminent potential of nuclear terrorism, a collapse of our economy due to the greed and arrogance of "the smartest people in the room," the end of American hegemony over the world, and therefor, the end of our preferred access to the magic elixir, oil, that makes our comfortable way of life possible, you'll get a glimpse of the future Kunstler envisions.
James Kunstler gives us the key to the puzzle of everyday events that brings the whole picture into focus. The trends that are in motion now, how they will interact to create dramatic changes in the near future. Like the illustrations that dare you to "Count the squirrels in this picture!", World Made By Hand will let you see the future that has been concealed in seeming random chaotic acts by separate actors.
Massive change can happen overnight, when tensions are released along fault lines that have endured pressure for centuries. Don't be caught unawares when it happens! I believe we are coming into an era of radical and unpleasant social/political/economic changes that have been stewing quietly for years. In hindsight, they will seem predictable, just as 9/11 does now.If you want to find out where the juggernaut of world events is going so you can get out of the way, I urge you to read this book quickly. I did.

Recession Planning Pays Off
From what I read, there's a recession on the way and it's going to be a doozy! A few highly-respected advisors are finally admitting we may already be in a recession, though many of the estalishment's Talking Heads are still denying the obvious. You can decide who to trust - it's your money!
Oil prices, of course, play a part in the tightening noose around the American consumer spending. There's also the credit crunch fueled by the uncertainty on the part of banks and investors how tainted some major players are with subprime loans. There's a housing meltdown, slow sales of Automobiles, and bad Christmas retail sales, too, so it doesn't look good.
Oh yes - I forgot to mention Inflation, Job Losses up, and the Decline of the Dollar!
I've placed some good videos on a page with some strategies I've found for dealing with very uncertain times in the past. Check it out, you won't find this kind of original thinking in the MSM: http://www.defending-your-retirement.com/recession_planning.html . Be sure to see my Retirement Plan B when you're there!

Overlooked Retirement Dangers
I've added a new "overlooked retirement danger" to my collection on my Web site. Reading James Kunstler's book, The Long Emergency, reminded me how close we are to seeing real havoc caused here in suburbia by running out of cheap oil and natural gas.
Many folks of the Baby Boom Generation are starting to think about retiring. I'm certainly one of them. But, if you're not smart about your planning, one of the overlooked retirement dangers - or more than one - will sneak up and bite you in the butt!
Imagine settling in to your well-earned retirement in sunny southern Florida or Arizona or Texas and, after a few years, finding out that there's an oil embargo by the Iranians or OPEC and gas is unaffordable, so there's no way to drive to the store and there's no food at the store anyway! Read Kunstler's book and you'll see how this can happen.
Another overlooked retirement danger is this so-called War on Terror. It should be obvious that we're going to lose. Over the many years we have backed the kings and dictators who rule the countries of the Middle East, we have offended the pride and sovereignty of the common people there. And they're tired of the mega-rich assholes who are bleeding the oil wealth of their nations, leaving only crumbs for the common people. Since the U.S. stands behind the kings and military leaders that keep them from being free, they have found a way to strike back effectively at us. We call it terrorism, they call it jihad - "Holy War."
How can we win? The money we pay for their oil is, in part, siphoned off to support Osama bin Laden through a network of Saudi and other Islamic charities. We're paying to arm our enemies every time we fill up our Hummer or Escalade or Navigator! And for them, a suicide bomber is cheap. Our B-1 bombers and Abrams tanks are expensive.
Like I say, we can't win. Yet Bush and Cheney won't listen to reason, nor to the voice of the Americans who want an end to this growing war.
A retirement danger that many overlook is the eventuality that Al Qaeda will acquire one or more nuclear bombs and use them on American cities. Like I say - There is no winning this war.
To learn more about how you can avoid the overlooked retirement dangers, check out www.defending-your-retirement.com
I even reveal the original moneymaking at home business, which will really take off as we run out of oil and gas. See it here: www.defending-your-retirement.com/proven_income_opportunity.html
Til next time! Get ready for the Long Emergency!

Ron Paul is the leader we need
I've been encouraged to see the Web-based support for the Presidential candidacy of Congressman Ron Paul. He is the one candidate for the 2008 race who has the integrity and principles as well as the political skills we need to guide America through what Jim Kunstler calls "The Long Emergency."
If you're not aware of Ron Paul, I'd invite you to visit his main site www.ronpaul2008.com to find out what you're missing. He's written a lot on www.LewRockwell.com , where you can search the archives for his views on many subjects. I'm not aware of his take on Peak Oil specifically, but he is very involved in keeping the U.S. out of resource wars such as Iraq, which will drag this nation down like quicksand.
Ron is running as a Republican in the true, old-fashioned Conservative sense that we need to downsize the federal government and stay out of other countries' quarrels. His principles are about as purely libertarian as anyone you will find in American politics. He ran as Libertarian Party's presidential candidate for 1988 and I voted for him then, so he's got a long, consistent track record. He walks his talk.
As more time passes, it's becoming clear that Peak Oil is going to be a driving issue for the future of this nation and the world. The Bush/Cheney presidency is evidence that the fight for access to the remaining major oil deposits is one of the major hidden agenda items in American politics. The quality of our individual lives is going to depend on the quality and vision of the leaders we elect in 2008 (if Bush doesn't find a pretext to abort the elections).
Be sure to read The Long Emergency by Kunstler and get familiar with Ron Paul. He needs our support and we need him in the White House.

If you're concerned about your retirement...
If you're an American concerned about retiring in the next few years, I have some information that will be useful to you on my new Web site: Http://www.defending-your-retirement.com/
A lot of us are concerned about the direction this country is taking - and for good reason. America was already near the edge financially, as far as being able to pay for the Boomer Generation's Social Security benefits, but the Bush administration's military adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq threaten the peace, prosperity, and freedom we have taken for granted here in the United States.
Many Americans assume that by changing parties in the White House and Congress, from Republican to Democrat, that things will get back to normal. In my new site about Overlooked Retirement Dangers, I give the reasons why this will not be the case.
This is not about wild conspiracy theories. It's a matter of simple arithmatic and it will affect you, even if you have millions of dollars of assets.
Whether you're young or old, if you care about the future of this country, I'd urge you to take a look at what the best thinkers have to say. You aren't hearing a true picture of our predicament from the average politician. Prepare your family now.
For a fresh and easily usable strategies to protect your friends and loved ones from the overlooked retirement dangers, subscribe to my site's free RSS feed.
